3225 - Te Tapui Loop (Maungakawa) - Sunday 22nd Feb 2026

This trip replaces both the planned Hiwiroa Peak tramp (track overgrown) and the Homunga Bay to Waihi Walk (track closed due to slips).

Private vehicles will leave London Street (river end) at 8.00 am and travel to Maungakawa Reserve, which is situated between Cambridge and Matamata. The popular circuit track takes walkers to the top of Maungakawa (495m). From the observation tower there is a nice panorama taking in the Kaimais, the Firth of Thames and Maungatautari. The total walking time is 3-4 hours and by walking anticlockwise it means the steeper climb up, makes for a pleasant downhill return.
