3234 - Circuit around Tama Lakes

This trip will now only be a circuit trip to/from Whakapapa Village. 

Day 1 - Travel to Whakapapa Village (time to be decided closer to the trip) and walk along the Ridge track down and up the Wairere Stream towards Saddle Cone to camp. There is a Gull Colony nearby to visit.

Day 2 - From Saddle Cone head across to the Waihohonu & Taranaki Falls track, then up the Upper Tama Lakes track before heading east between the two Lakes and follow ridgeline to Pt.1562. However, before Pt. 1562, we will descend to our left to a valley between Pt. 1584 and Pt. 1562 which is/was known as the RIFT in the Fire & Ice Book. There is also "Holl's Rock" to explore at the western edge of Pt.1562. At Pt.1562, we can leave our packs and ascend Tama (1623m) before descending towards Waihohonu Springs to camp. There is another camp option near Pt.1154 with some trees as shelter.

Day 3 - We could walk to Oturere Hut (which is being re-built) and head back and camp at Pt.1154. Today could be optional and just head back to the Village.

Day 4 - Walk back to Whakapapa Village via the Tarankai Falls track.

This is a camping trip only, therefore one needs to bring or share a tent, cooking equipment, sleeping gear, food and suitable clothing.
