3256 - Tongariro Full Moon

3256- Tongariro Full Moon 29/30th Aug

This trip has been a much sought-after event but has yet to be achieved in its’ entirety. Weather has invariably been the limiting factor and will be the same for this trip. Previous descriptions have started with an arrival on the Saturday at Mangatepopo Hut and a short snooze, but we may decide to go down on Friday afternoon. As the day comes to an end an evening meal is eaten and tramping gear donned for the walk up to the saddle between Tongariro and Ngaruahoe. Another option would be to sidle up from the Hut to Mt. Tongariro by moonlight and thence down to the Tongariro Crossing track back to the Hut. You would need to have a good head torch (and spare batteries), and warm clothing, along with all the other usual gear. If you’re up for this adventure, contact the club captain.
