3267 - Explore Ruapehu

Last year we tried to run this event, but the weather gods conspired against us. This weekend
trip to the Waikato TC lodge/hut, is aimed at various groups. Firstly, to anyone who has done
snowcraft in this or previous years and have not been able to reach the crater. With longer days
and it being less icy than in winter, it makes for a pleasant day out, weather permitting. Apart
from a couple of ways to reach the crater via the Whakapapa Glacier / Dome routes, there is a
nice climb up to Te Heu Heu Peak, the second highest on Ruapehu. Fitter people with the
necessary skills could attempt the highest peak, Tahurangi, via the crater. Even at this time of
year, crampons and ice axes will be used. On the easier climbs, we can impart the necessary
knowledge to you. However, you must have suitable boots that are crampon adaptable.
Other options include using the Sky Waka gondola to reach the heights by the Pinnacles (as well
as a kick-start for Te Heu Heu). Crampons and ice axe will_be required to do this as it is now
shaping up to be a good snow year.
Otherwise, there are walks at lower levels from either our Lodge or Whakapapa Village. An extra
option is a day Tongariro Crossing (which needs to be booked). Ultimately, feel free to have a
restful weekend enjoying our large library and carrying out small walks in the lodge vicinity. We
will have leaders for each level of activity.
UPDATE: We also have live music. On Saturday night we have two talented musicians
entertainingus. Jon Sanders, who played at our lodge in April last year, will be back again after
his European tour. From his website .... "Jon presents an uplifting collection of original uke and
bouzouki Celtic/Arabic and New Age Music. A deeply meditative, impishly playful jazz-tinged
gem" (Irish Times). Jamon is the second act, He is a New Zealand singer -songwriter whose
music "blends reggae-inspired grooves with soulful melodies and honest storytelling. He has
been influenced by Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Incubus and Crowded
House".
