This Sloggers not bloggers trip was...........Absolutely b. fantastic !
Despite an indifferent weather forecast on Monday morning we boarded the water taxi which took us up Lake Rotoiti to LakeHead hut to begin a 4 night loop up and down the Travers River.
This trip was full of NOs’ which are actually YES’s
No pests [sandflies, wasps, rats], no rain, no crowded huts and no smelly toilets, no long days. Just we 6, and nature, and of course the snow, the vistas and the birds - a superb spring time tramp. And a great opportunity to try out new gear and get some fitness prior to this coming tramping season.
We spent the first night at John Tait hut halfway up the valley then next day did a daywalk up to Cupola Hut sitting right on the snowline at the head of the Cupola Basin. On Wednesday we tramped to Upper Travers hut, a new hut in a stunning alpine setting looking directly at Mt. Travers. We were soon out exploring in the snow, then back to the warming hut fire, hot drinks, tea, and cards.
Next day we returned to JohnTait for more sun-bathing , while Keith and Margaret continued on to an ex NZ Alpine Club hut [Hopeless Hut] a small cute 6 bunker opposite the Angelus Range. Friday it was back to the water taxi, and home.
Many thanks to Debbie for organizing, and to the others in the group: Daven, Marianne and David from Nelson, and Keith and Margaret.
