3260 - Taupiri Scientific Reserve 27th September 2026

This reserve is located beside the SH 1 Huntly Bypass as it heads through the hills north of Taupiri. It extends from the stop-off parking area to the east of the highway. Once owned by Auckland University for research purposes, it is now public conservation land. Its scientific values are unknown but there are patches of kauri and tanekaha. DOC have eliminated all the goats so the bush should be in a regeneration phase.

We will enter the reserve from the end of Old Road and make our way, using modern and old navigation aids, through the forest along ridges to the high point (231m a.s.l.) and then back again in a loop towards the highway and across a valley to the start point. An off-track experience with a few steep sections.
