Navigation Course (Outdoor Training Waikato)

Navigation Course
This course develops your personal navigation skills and prepares you to be safer and more confident when tramping in the outdoors. It is delivered by qualified OTNZ instructors and focuses on practical, hands-on learning.
The course includes an in- person theory session (Fri 2nd Oct, 7-9pm) covering risk management and trip planning, topographical maps, the Silva compass and preparation for using map and compass together.  On the full day practical (Saturday 3rd Oct, 8:45am – 4pm in Waiorongomai Valley, Kaimais) you will learn to orient a map to the terrain, identify key features, determine your position, and navigate both on and off-track in bush-covered country. Core skills include maintaining location awareness, following a bearing, re-sections, aiming off, and boxing around.
Prerequisites participants must:
  • be over 18 years of age OR over 14 if accompanied by a parent / caregiver
  • have a reasonable standard of fitness as the course is approx. 8km with about 500m elevation over the day (e.g: able to climb 10 flights of stairs in about ½ hour
